Eastern Washington competed against Northwest University on Dec. 17 and ended the night with a convincing win of 90-48.
EWU took an early advantage by taking an 11-0 lead in the first three minutes of the first half. From then on, Eastern would continue to dominate throughout the game. Junior guard Lexie Nelson scored 15 points in the first half, while Eastern, as a team, scored 47 points.
EWU led by an astonishing 31 points and 32 rebounds in the first half, while also managing to force 13 turnovers. In the second half, EWU increased their lead to 42 points in the first six minutes.
Senior center Laura Hughes became a factor in the second half by scoring in double figures and then ending the game with 13 points and seven rebounds. Eastern also had a good night from the free throw line, finishing 19-21 for the game.
EWU’s bench players also outscored the Northwest University bench, 38-25. Junior guard Kylie Huerta had a team-high of six assists. Freshman guard Jade Redmon contributed with five assists, while senior guard Aubrey Ashenfelter chipped in with eight points and six rebounds.
Other EWU players contributed during the game as well. Junior forward Melissa Williams finished with six points and seven rebounds, freshman guard Tisha Phillips had 10 points and eight rebounds and Sophomore guard Hayley Hodgins had eight rebounds as well.
Nelson ended up finishing the game with 21 points, the team high for the game. She shot 6-of-10 for the game. Eastern as a team shot a field goal percentage of 44.3 percent overall, with 24 assists and 34 points in the paint.
The Lady Eagles will be competing against Boise State on Dec. 20 at Reese court, tipoff is at 6:00 PM, Friday.
