The EWU tennis team celebrated Senior Day by defeating Idaho for the first time since 2021 in a 6-1 win — the largest margin of victory EWU has ever had against the school.
Idaho took an early 1-0 lead by claiming the doubles point. EWU’s team of sophomores Zoe Pradel and Olivia Marais won the first match, but Idaho won the final two doubles matches.
The Eagles did not let dropping the doubles point affect the match outcome. EWU won all six singles matches en route to the 6-1 victory.
Pradel won her match in two sets against sophomore Hanna Kaprowski, who was one half of the doubles team that she had defeated earlier. Her 11 singles wins are tied for the most on the team.
EWU took a 2-1 lead after senior Anait Arutianian won her final regular-season tennis match at EWU. Last week, she was named Big Sky Tennis Player of the Week after going 2-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles across two matches.
Freshman Veronika Gayveyk put EWU in front, 3-1, by defeating junior Ida Johansson in three sets. The lead was pushed to 4-1 after Marais won her singles match in two sets and clinched an overall match victory for EWU.
Senior Leandra Nizetic also won her final EWU regular-season match. She is now tied with Pradel for the most singles victories on EWU, and is second in the conference in victories while playing in the second position. The final match to conclude was a three-set victory by freshman Aneliss Zamfirescu.
EWU is now 11-8 this season and 5-3 against Big Sky opponents. Next week, the team will compete in the Big Sky Conference Championships in Arizona from Thursday, April 23, to Saturday, April 25th. EWU will enter the conference tournament ranked as the number four seed.
