Eastern Washington University’s men’s basketball team made a late comeback to beat Big Sky first-place Montana Grizzlies by one point, winning 66-65.
EWU had come from behind, trailing Montana by 9 points with seven minutes remaining in the game. They held the Grizzlies scoreless and forced three turnovers in the final three minutes to battle back into the game.
The Eagles were down by one when Isaiah Moses attempted a game-winning 3-point shot with 4.7 seconds left. He missed, but junior forward Alton Hamilton IV was fouled while attempting to rebound the ball. He stepped to the line for a one-and-one opportunity.
Hamilton made the first free throw to tie the game at 65 and made the second to put EWU up by one.
Montana junior guard Money Williams took the inbound pass and crossed halfcourt before the Grizzlies coach Travis DeCuire called a timeout with one second remaining. However, after video review, the referees determined only half a second remained.
On the ensuing inbounds pass, the Eagles deflected the ball, and Montana could not attempt a shot before time expired.
The game’s leading scorer was graduate student guard Isaiah Moses. He scored 20 points and led both teams with five assists.
The Grizzlies committed 12 turnovers while facing pressure from EWU’s defense. Graduate student guard Straton Rogers led the team in steals with two.
Williams led Montana with 18 points and seven rebounds. His 19.6 points per game entering the contest ranked first in the Big Sky.
Junior guard Brooklyn Hicks came off the bench for Montana and scored 15 points. He is one of six Grizzlies averaging at least 8 points per game.
