In the first game on Reese Court, Eastern Washington University’s men’s basketball team defeated Eastern Oregon 91-73 on Monday, Nov. 17, to earn its first win of the season. EWU received contributions from multiple players who joined the team via the transfer portal this summer.
The Eagles had lost their first four games playing away from Cheney, but are now 1-4 behind 22 points from senior guard Isaiah Moses. In his first five games at EWU after leaving UC Riverside, Moses is averaging 18.8 points per game, the third-most in the Big Sky Conference.
EWU’s second-leading scorer this season, junior forward Alton Hamilton IV, filled the stat sheet across multiple categories. He finished the game with 10 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 blocks. Hamilton, who was named the Cascade Conference Player of the Year last season for Lewis-Clark State College, is currently inside the top 20 in the Big Sky in both rebounds and assists per game.
Graduate student guard Straton Rogers secured season-bests with 17 points and 10 rebounds. He also made his first three-point shot of the season. Rogers transferred to Eastern Washington this season after averaging 7.3 points per game for the College of Idaho. This season, he has increased his scoring output to 8.8 points per game despite moving up from the NAIA to Division I NCAA basketball.
Two other transfer students scored double-digit points as well. Former Miami Hurricane Kiree Huie, a graduate student forward, had 14 points and 5 rebounds, while senior guard Jojo Anderson, who transferred from Whitworth, scored 13 points and stole the ball 3 times.
The Mountaineers’ top scorer was junior guard James Bodily, who came off the bench to score 16 points. He made all four of his three-point attempts. Junior guard Eamon Monahan, who leads the team with 19.5 points per game, scored 13.
Eastern Washington’s next game is on the road on Sunday, Nov. 23, against Central Arkansas. The Eagles will not play their second home game until Dec. 6, when they will take on Kansas City as part of the Big Sky-Summit League Challenge. EWU players will be signing autographs after the game.
