Thanksgiving
November 21, 2014
The comfort of good food typically brings happiness to hungry college students. Therefore, when Thanksgiving break is near, college students look forward to food and family.
Haita Toure, a junior, is an Alaskan native. Unable to travel to her hometown to be with her parents in Alaska, Toure said she will be traveling to the western side of Washington to spend her holiday with some special people.
“My sister lives here as well as my aunts and cousins,” said Toure. “They all live in Everett, [Washington].”
According to Toure, she is most looking forward to spending quality time with her family and eating an unlimited amount of food.
“I’m going to hang out with family, eat until I cannot walk and just chill and relax,” said Toure.
Toure said she will be traveling with friends via car to the western side of Washington and like many students traveling for the holidays, she fears the weather and chances of snow.
“I would have [bought] a [plane] ticket,” said Toure. “But tickets are crazy expensive.”
Some students do not have the luxury of traveling home for the holidays and are staying in the Cheney/Spokane area.
Lanae Dedmond, a freshman, is one of those students.
“My home is the Tri-Cities, [Washington],” said Dedmond. “My mother is retired and my sister moved over here, so my family is kind of doing their own thing.”
Dedmond is fairly new to the area and is uncertain how she will celebrate the holidays.
“I am probably going to make an evening with my kids, maybe go out to eat or attempt to make a bootleg Thanksgiving dinner,” said Dedmond, laughing.
For other students who are in the same predicament as Dedmond and unsure of where to indulge in a local Thanksgiving dinner, there are multiple charities between Cheney and Spokane where dinner is being served.
At Reese Court on Nov. 20, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:15 a.m., is the annual “University Thanksgiving Luncheon” held by EWU’s Dining Services. The tickets are $7 per person and children under 3 years old gets in for free. Tickets can be purchased at the door. Cash, check, card and flex are all accepted.
(I’m not sure if I should list these within the paragraph of leave them bullet point so you guys can put it in a informational box.)
