Aside from charity work throughout Greek Week, EWU fraternities and sororities got together for athletic competitions.

Greek life at EWU raised about $3,750 for charities of their choice, such as Cheney Food Bank, Dogs Deployed in Spokane and Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery in Spokane.

Samantha Armstrong, Associate Director for SAIL said the Greek community is amazing. “They are competitive but they come together as a community to really do some amazing things.”

The athletic competitions are just for fun, according to Armstrong.

A total of nine fraternities competed on Sunday’s men’s 3 x 3 basketball tournament. These nine fraternity teams were divided into three different pool’s, A, B and C. Pool A consisted of fraternities Delta Chi B, Phi Delta Theta B and Sigma Phi Epsilon. Pool B consisted of Pi Lambda Phi B, Beta Theta Pi B and Delta Chi A. Pool C consisted of Pi Lambda Phi A, Beta Theta Pi A and Phi Delta Theta A.

Each team played two 15-minute games before the first round of eliminations. The double-elimination first round allowed four teams to advance to a single elimination round where two wins earned the winning team the championship

It came down to Phi Delta Theta B vs. Sigma Phi Epsilon and Beta Theta Pi A vs.. Beta Theta Pi B.

Phi Delta Theta B took the win over SigEp, 10-9 and Beta Theta Pi A took the win over Beta Theta Pi B, 10-12.

For first and second place, Beta Theta Pi B vs. Phi Delta Theta B, Beta Theta Pi B took the lead.

“I knew going into the game we had the better athletes and better skill set,” said Donovan Howard from Beta Theta Pi B. With only five minuets remaining Beta Theta was still ahead, 11-7.

“I knew if we played hard we’d win no doubt,” said Howard. Beta Theta won the game, 15-7, claiming the tournament championship.

“I was extremely proud of my team. We played hard and played together,” said Howard. “Being apart of the 3 x 3 was so much fun and I enjoyed performing in front of the Greek community.”

For third and fourth place it was Sigma Phi Epsilon vs. Beta Theta Pi A. At the six-minute mark the score was 10-13 with Beta Theta Pi A leading. The game was tied at the four-minute mark, 14-14. SigEp took the win by one point, 15-14.

The placements at the end of the tournament was Beta Theta Pi B in first place, Phi Delta Theta B in second place, SigEp in third place and Beta Theta Pi in fourth place.

“They have a lot of fun doing it and by the end of the week it’s a lot of smiles. They are really pretty great,” said Armstrong.
