The EWU football team came up just short this past weekend, losing in the FCS National Championship game to North Dakota State. Second place in the nation is no easy feat, and making the national championship would meet and exceed the standards set by any FCS school, except for maybe NDSU, who has won seven of the past eight national titles.

Here’s a look back at EWU’s first and only other national championship appearance in 2010, in which the Eagles held off Delaware 20-19 to claim the school’s only title win. EWU trailed 19-0 at one point in the game, but were able to march back in a triumphant comeback victory.

Head coach Beau Baldwin’s 2010 Eagles were led by quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell, who was a key component in the second-half comeback. EWU football has seen much success over recent years, but 2010 was the year to remember.

This year’s championship didn’t yield the same results, though second place is nothing to be ashamed of. Some key returning players next year, including quarterback Eric Barriere, will look to accomplish the ultimate goal again next year.
